Announcing the 2011 WPMCA Foundation Scholarship Recipients
The WPMCA Foundation is pleased to announce the 2011 annual scholarship recipients: Sedrick Huppert and Alyssa Tinsman!
Sedrick Huppert is connected to our industry via Team Oil in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. Sedrick will be attending the UW-Madison in the fall, majoring in Physics. He wrote in his application, "I plan to major in Nanoscience Engineering. I think that the strange conditions of quantum mechanics that emerge when working at such a small level create huge possibilities for engineers, and I would like to be involved in the cutting edge developments that will shape our future."
Sedrick has outstanding grades, is active in his community, and puts in significant hours at the family business. He plans to pay for college on his own – now somewhat easier with the help of this scholarship.
Allysa Tinsman is part of the Yaeger Oil family in Laona, Wisconsin. Allysa is majoring in Elementary and Special Education at the UW-Oshkosh.Allysa earned excellent grades in high school while being active in several sports and charitable organizations. All four years of high school she played volleyball, basketball and softball – captaining each team and being named player of the year her Senior year of softball.
One of her advisors wrote about her work ethic in a way that exemplifies how our industry is raising some of the best and the brightest: "Allysa has worked at the Yaeger Sport and Mini Mart since she was a young girl. I have observed countless Saturday and Sunday mornings when she has been at work while most young adults her age were still sleeping. The work ethic that she has established will be a valuable asset to her and her future employers."
There were 26 excellent candidates for these scholarships. The Foundation Board was extremely impressed with all the applicants, and especially pleased to select Sedrick Huppert and Allysa Tinsman as outstanding representatives of our industry and deserving recipients of our scholarship. They will each receive $1000 for the 2010-11 school year. These scholarships are renewable for a total of four years if eligibility requirements are met.
2010 Scholarship Recipients
Elizabeth Martinez, an employee of Petro-Iron Skillet in Portage, is attending the Madison Area Technical College and plans to earn a degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician.A good description of Ms. Martinez comes from one of her teachers, "I taught Beth in a Principles of Economics-Microeconomics course in the spring of 2009. She was one of the two best students in the class – well-prepared, scoring well on all types of work, attentive, and consistent in participation and attendance – earning an A despite it not being her major area of study. I have had several conversations with her about her interests in laboratory work and entrepreneurship, and have always been impressed by her thoughtful consideration of opportunities, long-range planning, and research about things she is not familiar with."
Cassie Urlaub, an employee of Baltus Oil Company in Marshfield, is attending the UW-Eau Claire this fall with plans to earn a degree in Accounting.Cassie writes in her application, "My proposed field of study is a Major in accounting and a minor in either marketing or finance. I hope to someday work within a large corporation aiding the business in successful and ethical practices. I also want to have my own accounting firm on the side helping small communities and families with their finances and accounting needs. I want to be successful and work hard each day to obtain a career that will be suitable to fit my needs within our society."
